Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located on the Cumberland River in Davidson County. Nicknamed "Music City, U.S.A.", Nashville is the home of the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and many major record labels. Since much earlier times it has been called the "Athens of the South", for its educational institutions and classical architecture. Nashville is also a major hub for the health care and publishing industries.

Nashville lies on the Cumberland River in the northwestern portion of the Nashville Basin. The population of the entire 13-county Nashville metropolitan area is 1,311,789, making it the most populous metropolitan area in the state.

Many popular tourist sites involve country music, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium, which was for many years the site of the Grand Ole Opry. Each year, the Country Music Association's Fan Fair (renamed "CMA Music Festival" in 2003) brings many thousands of country fans to the city.

Things to Do

Things to do:

There is a lot to see, hear, eat and do in Nashville. The following are our top 5 places for food and things to do in Nashville

Food

5. Nashville Hot Chicken -  A Staple in Nashville, this fiery fried chicken is flavorful and delicious. Hattie B's is the most famous for Hot Chicken, but don't be afraid to venture out to Prince's Hot chicken in Nashville or Big Shakes Hot Chicken in Franklin.

4. Farm-to-Table / Upscale - If looking for a nice place to have a great dinner, the Nashville area has great choices.Gray's on Main in Franklin is a great place for an upscale southern menu with a great bar with mixologists at the ready. Sinema in Nashville is also a great place with a great whiskey and bourbon selection. The building is an old Cinema which adds to the upscale nature of this restaurant.

3. Southern Cookin' - If you're on a diet, these options may not be for you. Pucketts is a great location for live music, BBQ or Erik's favorite Piggy Mac. With multiple locations, the Nashville and Franklin locations are our favorites. Another great location is Tupelo Honey in Franklin. Great southern dishes mix with great salads and local brews. The Loveless Cafe is also great for breakfast and great southern cookin', but keep in mind they are catering the wedding.

2. Biscuits - There are many places to get great biscuits in Nashville and its surrounding communities. Biscuit Love is a great place in the Gulch section of Downtown Nashville, although be aware, the line on the weekends can get very long. Hollar & Dash is a great breakfast restaurant in Brentwood and has great biscuits. The Loveless Cafe also has great biscuits... many some will show up at the wedding!

1. Barbecue - Nashville and its surrounding areas have AWESOME BBQ and there are so many places to indulge. Our favorite is Martins BBQ which is a local chain with locations in Nashville and Nolensville. Jack's BBQ on Lower Broadway in Downtown Nashville is also a must. If you find yourself near Opryland, Mission BBQ is a great stop for lunch.

Entertainment

5. The ParthenonThe Parthenon in Centennial Park, in Nashville, Tennessee, is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. It was designed by Confederate veteran William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.

4. The Gulch - an upscale neighborhood known for its chic hotels, high-end fashion boutiques and trendsetting restaurants. In a striking art deco building, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts hosts diverse, adventurous exhibitions, as well as film screenings and lectures. Renowned bluegrass musicians take the stage at The Station Inn, a tiny club open since the 1970s, while Mercy Lounge has indie, soul and folk gigs.

3. Breweries, Vineyards and Distilleries - Middle Tennessee has several breweries, vineyards and distilleries that are a must. Yazoo and Fat Bottom Breweries are just a few of the many in Nashville. If you are looking for a Vineyard, we highly recommend Arrington Vineyards, founded by Kix Brooks of country group Brooks & Dunn. Located just south of the Kentucky Bourbon Belt, Middle Tennessee has a few Distilleries that are worth a visit. In Downtown Nashville, there is Nelson's Green Brier Distillery which creates Belle Meade Bourbon. There are also Leiper's Fork Distillery and H Clark Distillery which are south of Nashville.

2.  Lower Broadway / Printers Alley - The Broadway Historic District, in the shadow of the famed Ryman Auditorium, is probably best known for the many music and tourist-related businesses that remain in this area. Known as Lower Broad, this section of Broadway has for decades attracted country music fans to its honky-tonk bars. Some of our favorite honky-tonk bars are Tootsie's and The Stage, or go see our friend Chris Ferrara play at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row on Thursday night. You can also check out the Country Music Hall of Fame or a Predators game at the Bridgestone Arena.

1. Franklin, TN - A key site of the American Civil War, it’s home to 2 properties exploring the 1864 Battle of Franklin: Carter House and Carnton Plantation, which includes the McGavock Confederate Cemetery. The 1858 Lotz House contains a large collection of 19th-century furniture. Downtown’s Main Street is lined with galleries, antique shops and restored Victorian buildings. Don't forget to get a scoop or three of our favorite ice cream (from Michigan) at Kilwins.
